What a wonderful story!! It brings back memories of the ten years that Sandy my Golden and Shadow my Sheltie and I were therapy dog teams and we visited many people. I know everyone enjoyed your visits, and isn’t it a grand feeling when you have completed a visit? My heart was always full of joy. Best wishes to you as you continue on your visits! Hugs.

It’s nice to learn more about how Cathy and Icy are changing children’s lives. I think the reading programs are fantastic and I’m amazed at the different ways youngsters can be reached through the program. Great job Cathy and Icy!

  11. Cathy Armato says:

Thank you for your thoughtful comments, Elaine – we appreciate that! The reading programs really are terrific and so helpful to the children. Seeing them improve week over week is the greatest reward!

  12. I think this dog therapy is the best. After a lot of training and socialization, we took the Pet Partners’ Therapy Dog evaluation test and became an official therapy dog team. I cannot think of a more rewarding, fun way to help people and give back to the community.

  13. Val Silver says:

What a wonderful article. As a reading teacher, I love the idea of children reading to dogs. They are emotionally safe, present, and don’t criticize every little mistake (or any mistakes for that matter!)

  14. Cathy Armato says:

Thank you Val! I’m so glad you enjoyed the post. I didn’t know you were a reading teacher! So you know firsthand how a child reading to a dog can feel safe in a totally nonjudgmental environment.

  15. Jessica Claudio, DVM says:

I love the idea of visiting students before exams on a college campus. I was one of those students, missing those pets from across the state.

  16. Cathy Armato says:

Thanks for your comments, Jessica. So many of the students really miss their dogs at home in other states and Icy was able to give them their “puppy fix!”

That’s a great story Rachele and Cathy. Fantastic work you and Icy are doing! Wish we had more of these programs here in the UK.

  18. Cathy Armato says:

Thank you, thedogvine, for your comments! Perhaps there is an opportunity for you to help start a “Reading To Dogs” program in your area of the U.K. All it takes is one library, school, or even a homeless shelter to get on board and others will follow. It’s so beneficial to a community!

  19. vickisgreen says:

  37. Very interesting post on therapy work. Our dog Thunder was certified as a therapy dog when he was younger, but at that time there weren’t many programs around here. Then, of course, we went in a different direction with spending our free time field training. So I guess that was an opportunity missed. Thanks for joining the Barks and Bytes Hop.

  38. Thanks, 2 Brown Dawgs!

How wonderful! I love it that Icy is helping so many different age levels!
